Subject Guide
Mathematics AA
Math AA is a structure + precision subject. Marks come from showing working, respecting domain restrictions, and clean algebra.
High score rule: Every question must show logical flow. Even if calculator gives answer instantly, method earns marks.
Assessment (Typical Structure)
Exact details vary by SL/HL and syllabus year.
Paper 1
No calculator (usually).
- Algebra discipline.
- Exact values (π, surds).
- Clear logical steps.
Paper 2
Calculator allowed.
- Technology use (solve, integrate, matrices).
- Interpretation of output.
- Still show reasoning.
Paper 3 (HL)
Problem-solving.
- Multi-step reasoning.
- Model building.
- Explain logic clearly.
Best Study Method (Math)
- Daily: 6–10 mixed questions.
- Weekly: 1 timed mini-paper.
- Error log: track recurring algebra mistakes.
- Redo wrong questions after 48 hours.
Math mistake pattern: skipping algebra steps causes sign/domain errors.
Answer Structure Template
- 1) Write equation clearly.
- 2) Show manipulation step-by-step.
- 3) State restrictions (domain/denominator).
- 4) Final answer boxed and labeled.
Always check: Is the trig value within [-1,1]? Did you state domain restrictions?
Common Mark Traps (Math)
Trap 1: Domain
Forgetting restrictions (log, denominator, trig).
Fix: always state domain explicitly.
Trap 2: Rounding
Rounding mid-solution.
Fix: round only at final answer.
Trap 3: Notation
Messy algebra loses clarity.
Fix: clean line spacing + logical structure.
Quick Practice Checklist
- Can I solve without looking at worked solutions?
- Did I show every algebra step?
- Did I check domain restrictions?
- Did I box final answers clearly?
